Mainly to give the
organization an automatic way of controlling software licensing.
If they buy a CD
via the purchasing department it's OK, but if for example a dep. manager
approves to buy on-line a software, and a team leader buys it, and downloads
it, no one (purchasing/IT manager) will know about it.
Same for trial,
shareware. there are legal issues that the organization needs to know.
So, if a software application as information of name, date of expiration,
price, number of licenses, etc... as soon as someone downloads it from the web,
the server in the organization captures that, records it and maybe also sends
an email to the person, and the finance/purchasing dept[2014: who needs that?]
